The Veterinary Officers and Animal Health Assistants routinely visit the Government Livestock Station at Greenland to check on the health of livestock and to carry out basic herd health procedures, such as deworming, dehorning, hoof trimming, etc. The Animal Health Assistants, who report to the Veterinary Officer, handle simple treatments. The Veterinary Officer is ultimately responsible for medical and surgical procedures on the livestock station.
The Veterinary Officers and Animal Health Assistants are also responsible for:
- Monitoring the health status of all livestock on farms throughout the island
- Epidemiological surveillance on selected livestock diseases
- Tuberculosis testing
- Amblyomma (bont tick) surveillance and eradication
There has not been an outbreak of a major animal disease in Barbados since 1976.
