The Giant African Snail is considered to be the most damaging land snail in the world and will feed on over 500 different plant species.

Feeding habits:
It seems to prefer breadfruit, cassava, papaya, peanut, banana and most vegetables. The adult snails generally feed on decaying organic matter, including garbage, fallen fruit and animal manures. The young snails can cause serious damage to living plants especially flowers and vegetables

Description:
- The shell is brown with reddish- brown and light yellow streaks.
- The head bears two pairs of tentacles (one short pair, for touch, and the other one longer pair with eyes at the tips)
- The adult snail may grow to 20cm (8") long with the shell up to 10(4"). Adults snails may weigh as much as 1kg (2.2lbs) and can live as long as nine years.
- The snail lays eggs in batches of 100-400 with up to 1200 being laid in one year. The eggs are round in shape, yellow to cream in colour and 4.5-5 mm (1/4") in length and hatch in 8-21 days.
- The snail is a hermaphrodite.
The Giant African Snail can be killed by:
- Crushing them
- Using bait pellets containing the chemical metaldehyde
- Collecting the snails and placing them in a bucket 2/3 full of strong salt water or sea water. Cover the bucket.
- Heaping up the snails and burning them
